Membership

Membership of ASFLA INC is open to individuals. There are two membership types:
Annual membership:
Full – $40
Student – $25
Life membership:
Life – $250

We encourage full-time researchers and teachers to consider taking up life membership, as there are in-built sustainability measures in the life-membership category that aim to ensure the longevity of the organisation into the future, and to help fund large scale projects.

To join ASFLA INC or renew your membership, please complete both of the following steps:

  1. Register through the sign up form: ASFLA Membership Register
  2. Pay your fees by internet banking transfer, using the ASFLA INC bank details given here.
The ASFLA INC bank account details are as follows:
Account Name: Australian Systemic Functional Linguistics Association
    BSB: 082-021
    Account Number: 52 821 8788
Please quote your last name + MBR + the relevant year (e.g. Doran MBR16) so that we can allocate the money correctly.

Member Benefits

ASFLA INC members receive a number of benefits including discounts on registration for ASFLA INC conferences. Members can also apply for funding for projects which advance knowledge and practice in systemic functional linguistics.

How are membership monies spent?

ASFLA INC has two revenue sources: membership and ASFLA INC conference proceeds. In recent years, when someone registers for an ASFLA INC conference, they receive one year’s membership automatically. In years when there is an ISFC in Australia, such as in 2017, an ASFLA INC conference is not held. That means there is no revenue for ASFLA INC for that year. For this reason, we encourage members to renew their membership on an annual basis, or to become a life member.
Here are some examples of the ways in which ASFLA INC membership monies have been spent:

  • Annual ASFLA INC conferences
  • Halliday & Hasan Archiving Project
  • Gunther Kress symposium held at Sydney University 2019
  • Functional linguistics: descriptive and typological perspectives symposium held at Sydney University 2018
  • Hasan Symposium at Macquarie University 2016
  • Halliday Symposium at Sydney University 2015
  • Appraisal symposia held at UNSW (2013, 2015)
  • Register and Context Symposium at Macquarie University
  • International Educational Semiotics Website
  • Numerous international exchanges of scholars
  • Student scholarships to ASFLA INC Conferences
  • Over $16,000 in small grants awarded in recent years
